Coronation Street’s Beverley Callard shares health update after doctors express concern
Former Coronation Street star Beverley Callard has shared another update on her cancer after a hospital visit this week. The actor, best known for playing Liz McDonald, was diagnosed with breast cancer back in January.
Last month she explained that she went through an operation to have three lymph nodes removed, and dependant on whether the cancer is aggressive or not, she would either have chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
In this latest update, Callard explained that she will be going through radiotherapy soon, but noted that the doctors feel she should have already started it.

In an Instagram video, Callard said: “Well I went to the hospital today at quarter past 3, and they all seemed very nice, obviously they’re new to me.
“They are a little concerned because they think I should’ve started the radiotherapy before now.
“But of course because we moved house, it took a while for my records, my medical records, to come from England to Ireland etc, but they’ve all arrived.
“I’ve got to go back on Thursday morning to see some more doctors and medical people and then they will begin it soon. So it went okay, it went okay.”
The actor moved countries to join the Irish soap Fair City, and previously stated that she received the diagnosis via phone call while in her dressing room before going on set.
Recently, there was renewed speculation about a Corrie return, as the soap has killed off Jim McDonald off-screen and revealed that he had fathered a child through an affair.
“I can’t now because I’m filming something else but I think you should never say never,” she said.
She also explained that she felt Liz lacked storylines, but also couldn’t deal with “all day, every day” workload.
Overall though, she said: “I loved my time there, you don’t stay in something for 32 years if you didn’t love it.”
Beverley Callard has continued to keep fans updated on her emotional cancer journey, revealing that the next phase of her treatment is finally moving forward after weeks of uncertainty. The beloved former Coronation Street actress, who famously portrayed Liz McDonald for more than three decades, spoke candidly about her recent medical appointments and the difficult process of adjusting to life after her diagnosis.
The actress first confirmed earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering something was wrong during a routine check-up. Since then, she has been openly sharing her experiences with fans on social media, determined to raise awareness while also documenting the emotional highs and lows that come with battling the disease.
During her latest update, Beverley admitted that the transition between medical teams after relocating to Ireland created several delays in her treatment schedule. Although she tried to remain optimistic throughout the process, doctors reportedly expressed concern that the gap between surgery and radiotherapy had become longer than ideal.
According to Beverley, the delay was largely caused by the lengthy transfer of her medical records from England to Ireland following her move overseas. While the paperwork issue has now finally been resolved, the actress confessed that the waiting period left her anxious and emotionally exhausted.
Speaking honestly in a heartfelt video shared online, the soap legend explained that she recently attended another hospital appointment where specialists reviewed her case and discussed the next stage of treatment. Despite the concern surrounding the delays, she reassured supporters that the doctors were pleased with her recovery so far and remained hopeful about the outcome.
Fans quickly flooded the comments section with supportive messages, praising Beverley for staying so open about her health battle. Many viewers noted how inspiring it has been to watch the actress remain positive despite facing such a frightening diagnosis.
The actress also reflected on the shock of first learning she had cancer. She previously revealed that she received the devastating phone call while sitting in her dressing room preparing to film scenes for Irish soap Fair City. Beverley admitted that hearing the diagnosis moments before going on set was surreal, but she chose to continue working rather than immediately breaking down emotionally.
She explained that acting became a temporary distraction during one of the most difficult moments of her life. Throwing herself into filming reportedly helped her maintain some sense of normality while privately processing the terrifying news.
Although Beverley is now focusing mainly on her recovery, speculation surrounding a possible return to Coronation Street continues to circulate among fans. Recent storylines involving Jim McDonald reignited interest in whether Liz McDonald could eventually make another appearance on the cobbles.
Viewers recently learned that Jim had secretly fathered another child during an affair, a revelation that immediately sparked discussions online about Liz potentially returning to react to the shocking twist. However, Beverley explained that her current filming commitments would make an immediate comeback impossible.
Still, she refused to completely shut down the idea. The actress hinted that she remains deeply fond of the ITV soap and would never rule out returning someday if the timing felt right.
Beverley also opened up about the real reason she originally decided to leave the long-running series after more than 30 years. While she still treasures her time on the programme, she admitted that the demanding production schedule eventually became overwhelming.
According to the actress, the intense pace of soap filming left little room for rest or personal freedom. She confessed that the “all day, every day” workload became increasingly difficult to manage, especially as she got older and began prioritising her health and personal happiness.
She further revealed that she occasionally felt disappointed by the lack of major storylines for Liz during her final years on the show. Even so, Beverley stressed that she still has enormous affection for both the cast and the production team.
The actress warmly reflected on the incredible memories she created during her decades on the programme, noting that no one stays with a series for 32 years unless they genuinely love being part of it. Her portrayal of Liz McDonald transformed her into one of British television’s most recognisable soap stars, with fans continuing to celebrate the character years after her departure.
As Beverley prepares to begin radiotherapy in the coming weeks, supporters remain hopeful that the treatment will prove successful. The actress herself appears determined to keep fighting while maintaining the same humour and honesty that made her such a fan favourite throughout her television career.
Many longtime viewers have praised her willingness to discuss difficult subjects publicly, particularly because her openness may encourage others to seek medical advice sooner or feel less isolated during their own health battles.
Meanwhile, fans continue eagerly awaiting updates about both her recovery and her professional future. Whether or not Liz McDonald ever returns to Weatherfield, Beverley’s connection to Coronation Street clearly remains incredibly strong.
For now, the actress is concentrating on her health, surrounding herself with family and close friends as she navigates the next chapter of her cancer journey. Though the road ahead may still be challenging, Beverley’s latest update has reassured supporters that treatment is finally moving forward — and that she remains determined to face the battle with courage and resilience.
