Who killed Dr Caitlin Todd in Emmerdale? Every suspect explained
Another death has rocked the Dales as Emmerdale ended Wednesday’s (1 July) episode with a dramatic flash-forward scene revealing Dr Caitlin Todd’s death. The shocking twist followed the fallout from Leyla’s christening, which saw Mackenzie travel to Sheffield to confront Caitlin after weeks of tormenting Charity.
Caitlin blackmailed Charity before sexually assaulting her. But when Mackenzie demanded answers, she dismissed the allegations and insisted Charity had simply regretted what she described as a “consensual” encounter.

She then attempted to drive a further wedge between the couple by revealing that baby Leyla was the result of Charity’s one-night stand with Ross Barton. What Caitlin didn’t consider, however, was that Mackenzie already knew the full truth. Enraged, Mackenzie trashed Caitlin’s office before security intervened. But their confrontation wasn’t over.
After finishing her shift, Caitlin found Mackenzie waiting on a stairwell, where she continued to taunt him. Although he kept his anger in check, he issued a chilling warning, telling her that if she ever went near Charity again, he would bury her.
Minutes later, the episode jumped forward as police arrived at a crime scene and discovered Caitlin’s body. While Emmerdale has yet to confirm whether Caitlin’s was murder, the circumstances surrounding her death leave no shortage of suspects.

Mackenzie immediately puts himself at the top of the suspect list. Not only was he the last person known to have confronted Caitlin, but he also openly threatened to kill her moments before her death was revealed.
His anger has been building slowly since Charity told him the truth behind her postpartum depression struggle. The revelation that Caitlin continued to gaslight Charity pushed him over the edge in her office, showing just how volatile the confrontation could have become has security not intervened.
Soap fans know that characters who make explicit threats often become obvious suspects, whether guilty or not, meaning Mackenzie could be about to face intense scrutiny from police.

Ross also had every reason to want Caitlin gone. His one-night stand with Charity became ammunition for Caitlin, as she repeatedly used it to extort money out of Charity. Now that Charity has revealed the truth, Ross’ friendship with Mackenzie could also be damaged beyond repair, strengthening his motive.
Prior to Mackenzie knowing the truth, Ross was keen to keep his encounter with Charity a secret and was well aware of Caitlin’s scheme. If he believed she would never stop tormenting Charity and Mackenzie, he may have decided to take matters into his own hands.

Jacob Sugden
As a junior doctor, Jacob worked alongside Caitlin and was among the first Dales residents Caitlin targeted as she bullied him for months. Following Leyla’s birth, Caitlin shifted her attention to Charity, leaving Jacob to make the most of fatherhood with Sarah.
Jacob is completely unaware that Caitlin’s bullying has taken sinister proportions and has taken a backseat from all the drama. While he’s not known for violence, soap murder mysteries often rely on unlikely suspects.
Still, Jacob could still be considered as a suspect, as finding out Caitlin’s blackmail and abuse, along with the shock of baby Leyla’s real parentage could make him snap.

Sarah has witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of Caitlin’s behaviour on Jacob, but she has yet to discover how far the doctor was willing to go to torment her grandmother. Fiercely loyal to those she loves, Sarah has never been afraid to speak her mind.
Finding out Charity was manipulated, blackmailed, and undermined would have been enough to push anyone close to breaking point – but Charity’s sexual assault could be what pushes Sarah to take action.
Recent episodes have also seen Sarah affirm her pride in her Dingle roots, and the family has always been known for its lengthy history with violence and murder. Although Sarah has had little connection to Caitlin, she has every reason to want her out of her family’s lives.

Serena Sugden
Serena has quickly become another possible suspect thanks to her close ties to the Sugden family. The newcomer made her arrival in the Yorkshire Dales last week while helping Charity cope with her trauma and she’s settled into the village to reconnect with the Sugden clan.
Since her arrival, Serena has continued to support Charity and has expressed her aversion for Caitlin, but she has yet to reveal all her secrets as viewers try to figure out whether she could be too good to be true.
Serena is also the only villager (other than Mackenzie) who knows about Charity’s assault. If she believed the doctor posed an ongoing threat to Charity, she may have felt compelled to intervene. But could she be capable of murder?
Chas Dingle

No one protects their family quite like Chas. After watching Charity’s ordeal unfold, she has stood by her side with her tough-love approach and shown little sympathy for Caitlin. But like many other villagers, she’s completely unaware that Caitlin sexually assaulted Charity and the discovery could be enough for her to take matters into her own hands.
Chas knows the lasting impact abuse can have, due to her own history in the Dales. She’s also found herself at the centre of dramatic storylines before, and while violence isn’t usually her first instinct, she’d do almost anything to defend her own.

Manpreet Sharma
Manpreet is likely to find herself caught up in the investigation through her connection to Caitlin. The pair have nurtured a friendship, with Manpreet offering her support following Jacob’s complaint and waving her off as Caitlin departed for Sheffield.
Due to this bond, Manpreet could have valuable information about Caitlin’s movements in the hours leading up to her death. And the authorities will almost certainly want to hear from her.
Soap murder mysteries have always revealed hidden conversations or chance encounters after the fact, and while she currently appears to have little obvious motive, it’s still possible that Manpreet may be involved in Caitlin’s death.

Vanessa Woodfield
Vanessa’s brief romance with Caitlin came to an abrupt end when the doctor moved away to Sheffield. While their relationship never became particularly serious, it left Vanessa hurt as she’d been keen to explore the romantic potential.
Although Vanessa remains completely unaware of Caitlin’s secret campaign against Charity, she still has her own history with the doctor and could find herself drawn back into the story.

Charity Dingle
Charity has the strongest personal motive of anyone connected to Caitlin. For weeks, she’s lived under the doctor’s control after being blackmailed over the truth about Leyla’s parentage, leaving her terrified that her family would be torn apart if the secret came out.
Behind closed doors, Caitlin also sexually assaulted Charity, though she’s kept that ordeal hidden from almost everyone around her. Determined to stop Caitlin once and for all, Charity eventually reported her to the police, but the investigation offered no guarantee that Caitlin would face justice.
In this Wednesday’s (July 1) episode, Charity was seen mending her relationship with her son Ryan, with Serena’s support, before vowing to get justice one way or another. And she will almost certainly find herself at the centre of the police’s probing.
