Joe Tate leaves Moira staggered in Emmerdale with most un-Joe-Tate-like act imaginable

The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Emmerdale dated May 25. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.

Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) was a man on a mission in today’s episode of Emmerdale but for once, that mission didn’t feature him making someone’s life a misery.

Last week, it was confirmed that Joe and Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) had known about Dawn Taylor’s (Olivia Bromley) revenge plan for ages.

She wanted to steal all of Joe’s money and leave him with nothing after finding out that he had destroyed Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) and Moira Dingle’s (Natalie J Robb) lives earlier this year.

To Graham’s surprise, Joe’s plan for Dawn didn’t feature a dark idea that he had conjured up. Instead, he put a great deal of effort into trying to prove that he can change and put his family first. Joe didn’t want Dawn to leave, and also didn’t want to do anything that encouraged her to walk out of the door.

Dawn ended up staying because she witnessed a few deeply honest moments from Joe. She told him that they could make things work, but if he lies to her again, then things between them will be over.

Why do I feel like this is a case of famous last words…

Anyways. After Joe told Dawn that he’d do whatever it takes to demonstate that he can be trusted, he decided to put his money where his mouth is and get to work being relatively pleasant to Moira.

Weird, I know.

In the middle of a field, Moira was busy sorting a herd of cows that had – suspiciously – made their way from Emmerdale Farm onto the new Dingle land. Joe then arrived and suggested they put their differences aside and end their feud.

The problem with Joe is that he’s the walking definition of the boy who cried wolf, which meant Moira assumed his ‘let’s clear the air’ act was just another one of his schemes.

Now you can ensure you never miss a story from the Soaps team

His words weren’t exactly working with Moira, so he tried to show that he wanted to move on by telling Moira that she could keep the herd of cows, and the money that Dawn gave her a couple of weeks ago.

Moira wasn’t willing to shake Joe’s hand and contemplate the thought of being civil with him, because she knows him incredibly well.

The new claim that he was prepared to change for the woman he loves wasn’t enough for Moira. She refused to shake his hand and said that she really hopes, for Dawn’s sake, that Joe isn’t lying when it comes to being a better person.

So do I Moira, so do I.

After the tense confrontation between Joe Tate and Moira Dingle in the field, life in Emmerdale seemed far from peaceful. Even though Joe tried hard to convince everyone that he had changed for Dawn Taylor, very few people were willing to believe him. And the person who trusted him the least was undoubtedly Moira.

After refusing to shake Joe’s hand, Moira returned to Butler’s Farm feeling deeply unsettled. She couldn’t forget everything Joe had done to her and Victoria Sugden over the past few months. To Moira, Joe wasn’t simply a man who had made mistakes — he was someone who manipulated people, lied constantly, and destroyed lives whenever it suited him. Seeing him suddenly act kind and reasonable only made her more suspicious.

Cain Dingle quickly noticed that something was bothering his wife. When Moira explained what had happened in the field, Cain immediately lost his temper. He insisted that Joe was putting on an act to stop Dawn from leaving him. According to Cain, a man like Joe Tate doesn’t suddenly become good overnight. Cain even warned Moira that Joe could be planning something far worse behind everyone’s backs.

Meanwhile, Dawn desperately wanted to believe that Joe deserved another chance. After hearing his emotional confessions and promises to change, she began hoping they could rebuild their family together. Joe had been calmer with the children lately, less controlling, and more attentive to her feelings. For the first time in a long while, Dawn allowed herself to imagine a future where things actually worked between them.

But despite her optimism, a sense of unease continued to linger.

At Home Farm, Graham Foster also struggled to understand Joe’s sudden transformation. The Joe he knew would never willingly let Moira keep money that had been taken from him. Graham had spent years watching Joe manipulate situations to his advantage, which made this new “kind-hearted” version difficult to believe.

During a private conversation, Graham finally confronted him.

He bluntly asked Joe whether this sudden redemption act was genuine or simply another scheme designed to keep Dawn under his control. Instead of giving a direct answer, Joe remained strangely quiet.

That silence worried Graham more than any lie could have.

Elsewhere in the village, Victoria Sugden heard about Joe’s attempt to make peace with Moira and was furious when she learned Dawn had decided to stay with him. Victoria believed Dawn was falling directly back into Joe’s trap. While speaking with Aaron Dingle, she admitted she didn’t think Joe was capable of loving anyone except himself.

Still, Joe continued trying to prove himself.

The following day, he turned up at Butler’s Farm again, offering to help Moira deal with the cattle that had wandered onto the new Dingle land. But instead of appreciating the gesture, Moira became even more irritated by his presence. Every smile from Joe felt forced. Every apology sounded rehearsed.

Then came the moment nobody expected.

Joe sincerely apologized to Moira for everything he had put her through.

For a brief second, Moira hesitated.

She studied his face carefully, searching for any sign that he might actually mean it this time. But painful memories flooded back too quickly. She remembered every lie, every betrayal, and every cruel decision Joe had made.

Coldly, Moira told him that some damage can never truly be repaired.

Joe tried to hide how much her rejection hurt him, but the disappointment on his face was obvious.

After leaving the farm, he returned to Home Farm looking emotionally drained. Dawn immediately noticed something was wrong and tried to ask him about it, but Joe avoided the conversation completely.

What Dawn didn’t know was that shortly after leaving Moira, Joe had received a mysterious phone call.

The audience never heard the full conversation, but Joe’s expression changed instantly. His softer demeanor vanished, replaced by the cold and calculating look viewers know all too well.

It was enough to raise serious doubts about whether his redemption was genuine at all.

The next morning, rumors spread around the village that Joe had secretly started selling off parts of his business interests. Charity Dingle overheard the gossip first and immediately suspected Joe was either planning to flee the village or preparing for something much bigger.

Charity warned Dawn not to trust him too easily, but Dawn reacted defensively. She accused everyone of refusing to let Joe change and insisted that he genuinely wanted to become a better man.

But even Dawn’s confidence started to crack when she discovered Joe had secretly met with a solicitor in Leeds.

When she confronted him about it, Joe claimed it was only related to old financial issues. Yet Dawn could instantly tell he was hiding something. And that was exactly what frightened her most.

She had already warned Joe that if he lied to her again, their relationship would be over for good.

At The Woolpack, the idea that “Joe Tate has changed” quickly became the biggest joke in the village. Almost nobody believed it. Chas Dingle openly stated that Joe was simply waiting for the perfect moment to turn against everyone again.

Billy Fletcher also began worrying about Dawn. Despite everything that had happened between them, he still cared deeply for her and hated the thought of seeing her hurt again. Billy tried speaking to Dawn privately, urging her to be careful, but Dawn refused to listen.

She admitted she was exhausted from living in constant fear and suspicion. More than anything, she wanted to believe people could change.

But while Dawn tried to hold onto hope, Moira made another disturbing discovery.

One of the farm workers revealed that Joe had been seen near the new Dingle land late the previous evening. According to the worker, Joe appeared to be searching for something in the dark.

The information immediately unsettled Moira.

Why would Joe secretly return there after their conversation?

What was he looking for?

Moira couldn’t shake the feeling that Joe was hiding something dangerous once again.

As tensions continued building across the village, viewers were left wondering whether Joe’s redemption story was real or simply the beginning of another devastating betrayal.

The episode ended with a chilling scene outside Home Farm late at night.

Joe stood alone in the darkness, staring down at his phone after receiving another mysterious message. The audience never saw the contents of the text, but Joe’s expression said everything.

The warm, remorseful version of Joe disappeared instantly.

In its place stood the cold, ruthless man Emmerdale viewers have feared for years.

As Joe slowly lifted his eyes toward the house, it became painfully clear that Moira may have been right all along.

Joe Tate could promise Dawn the world. He could apologize, act kind, and pretend to change. But in Emmerdale, the past has a habit of catching up with people.

And for Joe Tate, the darkness may be far from over.
