Coronation Street’s Keith Duffy confirms cobbles future after bizarre on-air mention

Former Coronation Street star Keith Duffy received a strange on-air mention in a recent episode of the soap, sparking rumours that he might be making a comeback. However, in a disappointing update, the actor and singer has now confirmed that he has no plans to return to The Rovers.

The speculation began following a scene in the iconic pub on 1 April, during which current owner Maggie Driscoll made a joke about her son Ben liking Boyzone as a child.

Landlord Ben was embarrassed by her revelation, sarcastically thanking her for the reminder while his family giggled.

Duffy, who played ladies’ man Ciaran McCarthy on-and-off between 2002 and 2011, was also part of the iconic Irish boyband Boyzone. Fans were quick to point out the hilarious connection, hoping it might indicate a return for the popular character.

In an interview with The Irish Mirror, Duffy shared that he was aware of the “bizarre” mention, before quickly putting the comeback rumours to bed.

“Somebody sent [the clip] to me, that’s the only reason I saw it!” he explained.

“I did kind of think, ‘That’s a bit bizarre’, because I was the barman in the Rovers, Pauline [McLynn, who plays Maggie] was in the Rovers as her character talking about Boyzone – there were so many coincidences at the same time.”

The actor went on to share that he was confused by the small shout-out, but simply brushed it off as a joke between the writing team.

“I kind of wondered what was going on. Maybe it was the writers having fun?” he said, before confirming: “I’ve no plans to go back. So no, there’s no will to go back.”
