Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard reveals secret plan to leave soap
Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard has been one of the ITV soap’s major stars over the last year, with Carl Webster being at the heart of its biggest plots from the get-go: his affair with Abi, cheating on her with James Bailey, finding out he’s Debbie’s son and manipulating her, to name just a few.
While Carl has mentioned fleeing to Germany multiple times in the show, it looks like Carl is sticking around the foreseeable future to cause even more drama.
However, it looks like Carl could have made his exit by now, as Howard has revealed that the initial plan was for him to be gone by now.

Speaking to The Mirror, the actor said: “Originally, when I joined, it was like ‘OK, I’ll do 12 months.’ But [my daughter has] settled – she goes to school in Manchester – and so I don’t necessarily want to rock the boat right now.

“The universe has brought me back to the north. I’m an hour away from the village that I grew up in. I go home at the weekend and see my sister, my niece and nephew and my old friends, so my daughter is getting to touch in with her English roots.”
Having previously lived in America with his partner Elodie Yung and daughter Minavann, the family now live back in the UK, although Elodie is over in her native France acting in a project.
Howard
noted that Minavann is losing her American accent, joking that: “She’s starting to pronounce water with a ‘t’ rather than saying ‘warder’.”
Speaking about how long Carl could be staying around for, the actor stated: “I think we’d be missing out on something for Carl to leave before he’s come to terms with his mum’s dementia diagnosis. I would at least like to stay until we see what happens to Debbie. Then we’ll see what happens after that.”
For now, Corrie is revisiting Carl’s dodgy car dealing storyline at the moment, bringing back Sara Poyzer’s character Fiona Morley for it.
Over the past year, Carl Webster has become one of the most talked-about characters in Coronation Street. From explosive family revelations to complicated romantic entanglements, Carl has found himself at the centre of some of Weatherfield’s biggest storylines. While many viewers initially believed his arrival would be short-lived, recent comments from actor Jonathan Howard suggest that Carl’s journey may be far from over.
Since joining the ITV soap, Howard has quickly become a fan favourite. Carl’s arrival instantly shook up the Webster family dynamic, and the character wasted little time making enemies and allies alike. His secretive behaviour, questionable business dealings and emotional struggles have provided plenty of material for writers, helping establish him as one of the show’s most unpredictable residents.
What many fans may not realise, however, is that Carl was originally never intended to remain in Weatherfield for this long. According to Howard, the character’s future looked very different when he first signed on.
Speaking in a recent interview, Howard revealed that his initial agreement was based on a much shorter commitment. At the time, both he and the producers viewed Carl as a temporary addition whose story would reach a natural conclusion after approximately a year.
Yet as often happens in the world of soap operas, plans changed.
The actor explained that several personal and professional factors contributed to the decision to stay. One major reason involved his family’s transition back to the United Kingdom after years spent abroad. Howard had previously been living in the United States with his long-term partner, actress Elodie Yung, and their daughter Minavann.
Returning to England represented a significant life change for the family. While Howard initially expected the move to be temporary, circumstances soon evolved. His daughter settled into school life in Manchester and adapted remarkably well to her new environment.
As a result, the actor began reconsidering his original plans.
Rather than relocating once again after his first contract ended, Howard discovered that life in northern England offered something he had been missing for years: a stronger connection to his roots.
Being closer to family members has become particularly important. Howard grew up in the north and now finds himself just a short journey away from the village where he spent much of his childhood. The opportunity to regularly visit relatives, reconnect with old friends and introduce his daughter to family traditions has proven invaluable.
The actor has spoken warmly about watching Minavann embrace British culture. According to Howard, she is gradually losing some of her American speech patterns and becoming increasingly comfortable in her surroundings.
This personal stability has naturally influenced his professional decisions.
While actors often move between projects, Howard admitted that he currently feels no urgent desire to leave a role that continues to challenge him creatively. The combination of family happiness and compelling storylines has made Coronation Street an attractive long-term prospect.
Of course, Carl himself remains a deeply flawed character.
Viewers have watched him make questionable decisions repeatedly. His romantic history alone has generated enough drama to fuel months of episodes. Relationships that began with genuine promise frequently became tangled in deception, jealousy and betrayal.
One particularly controversial chapter involved his complicated connection with Abi. Their relationship experienced numerous highs and lows, with trust becoming an increasingly rare commodity. Fans were left divided over whether Carl truly cared about Abi or whether he was primarily motivated by self-interest.
Meanwhile, his interactions with James Bailey added another layer of complexity to the character. The emotional fallout from these storylines demonstrated Carl’s tendency to create chaos wherever he goes.
Yet despite his flaws, many viewers have developed sympathy for him.
Part of that sympathy stems from the revelation surrounding Debbie. Discovering significant truths about his family changed Carl’s perspective and forced him to confront painful realities. The storyline offered audiences a glimpse beneath his confident exterior, revealing insecurities and vulnerabilities that had previously remained hidden.
According to Howard, these family-centred stories are among the reasons he believes Carl should remain on the show.
The actor has repeatedly suggested that Carl’s emotional journey is far from complete. In particular, he feels that the character still has important unfinished business regarding Debbie and her ongoing struggles.
Fans have become increasingly invested in Debbie’s situation, and many believe upcoming episodes could dramatically alter the Webster family forever. Howard appears to share that belief.
He has indicated that Carl’s future should remain connected to these developments, arguing that viewers deserve to see how he responds as events unfold. Watching Carl navigate grief, guilt, responsibility and personal growth could provide some of the character’s strongest material yet.
Soap fans know better than anyone that major family crises often transform characters in unexpected ways.
A selfish troublemaker can become a hero. A trusted friend can become a villain. Someone who appears irredeemable may suddenly reveal hidden depths.
Carl sits at exactly that crossroads.
The character has spent much of his time in Weatherfield causing problems, but there are signs that he may eventually be forced to confront the consequences of his actions. Whether that leads to redemption or further disaster remains uncertain.
Another factor helping secure Carl’s future is audience reaction.
Coronation Street producers pay close attention to fan engagement, and Carl has consistently generated discussion online. Viewers may not always agree on whether they like him, but they certainly enjoy talking about him.
In television, that kind of reaction is extremely valuable.
Characters who inspire strong opinions often become essential to long-running dramas because they keep audiences emotionally invested. Carl’s ability to create conflict while still maintaining moments of vulnerability has made him particularly useful from a storytelling perspective.
Looking ahead, fans can expect even more complications involving Carl’s business activities.
Recent episodes have revisited some of his questionable car deals, reminding viewers that his entrepreneurial ambitions frequently come with hidden risks. Those storylines are expected to continue developing, potentially creating fresh tensions with other residents.
As always in Coronation Street, secrets rarely stay buried for long.
Any mistakes Carl has made in the past could easily resurface when he least expects it. Whether those revelations destroy his relationships or provide opportunities for personal growth remains to be seen.
What seems increasingly clear, however, is that Carl Webster is not preparing to leave Weatherfield anytime soon.
While his future was once uncertain, Jonathan Howard’s comments suggest both actor and character have found reasons to stay. With family drama, emotional storylines and ongoing business troubles all waiting around the corner, Carl’s next chapter could be even more dramatic than the last.
For Coronation Street fans, that’s excellent news.
After all, in Weatherfield, the most compelling stories often belong to characters who constantly walk the line between redemption and disaster. And few residents embody that balance better than Carl Webster.
