All the Emmerdale cast returns, exits and new arrivals in 2026

The departures and returns are continuing in Emmerdale as 2026 races by.

It’s been quite the start to the year for the ITV soap, as three of the village’s most evil residents; John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) and Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) all faced their ends via horrific murders.

We also said temporary goodbyes to Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) and Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh), with both actors heading off on maternity leave.

While the departures of Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley), Jimmy King (Nick Miles), Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) and Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) are imminent, also are the returns of bonkers baddie, Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) and femme fatale Sadie King (Patsy Kensit), while Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) will be making her debut imminently.

With plenty of changes afoot, here’s the lowdown on who is returning, leaving, and arriving in the ITV soap…

Emmerdale cast arrivals

Serena Sugden

‘There’s going to be a couple of arrivals to strengthen both the Sugden clan!’ producer Laura Shaw promised, and Emmerdale have delivered, with newcomer Serena arriving as a limb of the Sugden family tree we’ve yet to meet.

‘So Serena as a person, I’d say she puts her foot in her mouth quite a lot,’ Casey teased. ‘She’s quite loud and a little bit outspoken. I do think there’s elements of both good and bad in her. She’s come into a lovely family situation. Or is it lovely? You’ll see.

‘Let’s just say she’s going to be an incredible person to play, and hopefully you all love her or hate her in the bestest ways.’

When is Serena Sugden arriving in Emmerdale? This week.

Emmerdale cast returns

Now you can ensure you never miss a story from the Soaps team

Former queen bee of home farm and a character who’d easily give Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Kim Tate (Claire King) a run for their money in the ‘baddest bitch of the Yorkshire Dales’ stakes, Sadie King will be returning to the village she previously ran roughshod over.

While we’re unsure how or why Sadie is coming back, producer Laura Shaw has confirmed that much drama will follow: ‘We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Patsy Kensit back to the cast and crucially to see the iconic Sadie King storm back into the village.

‘Her return will be explosive and guaranteed to shock.’

Cathy Hope

Gabrielle Dowling has also left the soap – but she will be back.

Recent storylines have included Cathy Hope coming to terms with a PMDD diagnosis, and also dealing with the horrific death of twin brother Heath, played by Gabrielle’s brother Sebastian, who passed away following a car accident.

Metro understands that the star is just taking a short break and will return down the line.

Victoria Sugden

Victoria Sugden left the Emmerdale village in February to tie in with Isabel Hodgins’ maternity leave.

The actress announced on her Instagram last month that she has given birth to her first baby, called Georgie Grace.

Vic’s exit saw her leave for a new life in Portugal. She told Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) that she would return, though when exactly this will be remains to be seen.

Tracy Shankley

Amy Walsh recently left her role as Tracy Shankley, with the exit story facilitating Amy’s maternity leave.

The star, who is married to Toby-Alexander Smith, recently gave birth to her second child.

Tracy moved out of the village following a difficult year adjusting to life as a single mum, but she will return when her maternity leave comes to an end.

When is Tracy Shankley returning to Emmerdale? Currently unknown.

Emmerdale cast departures

Dawn Taylor

Dawn has recently been axed (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock)

It was recently revealed that Olivia Bromley will be departing from her role as Dawn Taylor after 8 years.

Her axing is believed to be a result of ITV’s cost-cutting measures, with both Emmerdale and Coronation Street reducing the amount of screen time some actors have and losing others.

Metro understands that a final explosive summer story will play out for Dawn involving her devious partner, Joe Tate (Ned Porteous), with Olivia still currently filming.

Jimmy King

Jimmy King, an undisputed Emmerdale legend and the last-standing member of the ruthless King dynasty, looks set to meet his end after 22 years on the show.

The re-emergence of ex-wife, Sadie, will reportedly play into Jimmy’s exit, which will come in the autumn and will have wide-reaching ramifications for the village, with a source confirming: ‘The scenes promise to be spectacular but the outcome will leave many fans shocked.

‘It may prove controversial but the jaw-dropping storyline will set in motion some massive consequences for many months to follow.’

When is Jimmy King leaving Emmerdale? Autumn.

Vinny Dingle

After a seven year stint in the Yorkshire Dales, Vinny will be departing the village.

Emerging as the son of Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley) and becoming central to various hard-hitting plotlines, including being abused by his step-dad, Paul Ashdale (Reece Dinsdale), losing his wife, Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele), struggling with his sexuality and an ill-fated marriage to Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham).

Vinny’s axing is understood to be another casualty of ITV’s cost-cutting measures.

Dr Caitlin Todd

After emerging in the village as the vicious, bullying boss of Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant), Todd has extended her toxic presence across Emmerdale by targeting Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) in a vile blackmailing scheme, and will inflict a sexual assault on her in upcoming scenes.

The dark plot will see Todd exit the show: ‘Caroline has loved her time at Emmerdale but it’s time to move on’, a source told The Sun.

‘She always knew playing such an evil character came with a shelf life but she’s leaving with many fond memories’.

When is Dr Caitlin Todd leaving Emmerdale? Currently unknown.
