Coronation Street star confirms excitement for Leanne’s future after ‘miserable life’

Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) has been through the wringer over the last few years in Coronation Street, but it seems the future will be more positive for the iconic character.

Poor Leanne’s life fell apart when she was indoctrinated into a sinister cult in 2024, which led to the end of her relationship with Nick Tilsley (Ben Price). To rub salt into the wound, he moved on with her sister, Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor), which caused a rift between the siblings for several months.

However, things are looking up for Leanne these days. Her latest business venture, Speed Daal, is doing well, and newcomer Idris Nazir (Junade Khan) has swept her off her feet.

‘I think it’s fair to say that he’s come in with a bit of a bang, and he’s got straight in there,’ actress Jane Danson said during an appearance on This Morning.

‘Leanne’s historically been quite well known for lots of relationships, and she wastes no time getting her hooks on the new guy – even though he did actually pursue her!’

Viewers will recall that Idris impressed Leanne when he stood up for Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) against some difficult Speed Daal customers. He was equally impressed when she fended off a mugger, and the pair ended up kissing over drinks in the Rovers that afternoon.

‘She’s having a great time,’ Jane said. ‘I think what we’re learning is that he’s a bit of a lovable rogue. He’s got a bit of an edge to him. I think because Leanne’s a bit edgy herself and a bit feisty, she quite likes that, and she’s quite drawn to that kind of edginess that he’s carrying around the street.’

This more upbeat storyline has been enjoyable for Jane, who said: ‘She’s had quite a miserable life, shall we say, so I’m quite enjoying the fact that Leanne’s smiling a little bit more at the moment.’

But it isn’t just Leanne’s love life that is set to cause excitement in upcoming scenes, as Jane has promised rivalry between Leanne and Nick and their restaurants.

‘She’s doing some fun things, and there’s loads coming up. And also, just because her and Nick have split up doesn’t mean that they won’t work together,’ Jane teased.

‘So, our characters are going to cross paths, but maybe not in the usual way. There might be a little bit of fighting and a little bit of mind games here and there in the future. But we’re looking forward to what they’ve got coming up.

‘[Leanne and Idris are] potentially working together in Speed Daal, and we’ve got Toyah and Nick in the Bistro. So, there’s a potential for a bit of restaurant wars, maybe.’

While Leanne Battersby appears to have finally found a sense of stability, fans of Coronation Street know better than to expect smooth sailing for long. The cobbles have a habit of turning happiness into heartbreak, and there are already hints that Leanne’s newfound contentment could soon face a serious test.

Since Idris Nazir arrived on the Street, he has brought a refreshing energy into Leanne’s life. After years of disappointment, betrayal and emotional turmoil, she has finally found someone who makes her laugh again. Their chemistry has been impossible to ignore, and many viewers have welcomed the pairing as a much-needed fresh start for the character.

However, Idris remains something of a mystery. While he has quickly won over Leanne, there are still plenty of unanswered questions about his past. His charming personality and confidence have made him popular among the residents, but some fans suspect there may be more to him than meets the eye.

Leanne herself seems determined not to dwell on potential problems. Having spent much of the last few years dealing with one crisis after another, she is choosing to focus on the present. Friends have noticed a dramatic change in her outlook, with Leanne appearing more relaxed and optimistic than she has in a very long time.

That positive attitude is also helping her professionally. Speed Daal has become a major source of pride for Leanne, and she is enjoying the challenge of building the business into a success. The restaurant has attracted a loyal customer base, and Leanne is throwing herself into every aspect of the operation.

But success often attracts competition, and that is where tensions with Nick Tilsley could become increasingly complicated.

Although Leanne and Nick have managed to move beyond some of the bitterness surrounding their split, their relationship remains far from straightforward. Years of history connect them, and emotions do not simply disappear overnight. Every interaction between them carries the weight of everything they have been through together.

Now that Nick is running the Bistro alongside Toyah, the potential for rivalry is obvious. Both businesses are competing for customers, attention and local prestige. What begins as harmless competition could easily escalate into something much more personal.

Sources close to the storyline suggest that the so-called “restaurant wars” may become one of the biggest ongoing stories of the summer. Promotional events, special offers and business schemes could see both sides trying to outdo one another. While much of the rivalry may initially be playful, old wounds have a habit of resurfacing when emotions run high.

For Leanne, seeing Nick and Toyah together continues to be difficult at times, even if she rarely admits it. Their relationship was a painful reminder of everything she lost during one of the darkest periods of her life. Though she has moved forward, certain moments still sting.

The situation could become even more complicated if Idris decides to take a larger role in Speed Daal. His involvement would place him directly in competition with Nick, creating another layer of tension between the former couple.

Meanwhile, Toyah finds herself caught in the middle. She wants to support Nick while also repairing her relationship with Leanne. The sisters have made progress in recent months, but trust is not rebuilt overnight. Any new conflict could threaten the fragile peace they have worked so hard to achieve.

Viewers have always been invested in the bond between Leanne and Toyah, and many hope the sisters can avoid another major falling out. Yet Coronation Street rarely resists the temptation to test family relationships, especially when business, romance and personal history collide.

Another interesting aspect of the storyline is the reaction from other residents. The Street has never been short of opinions, and many locals are expected to take sides as competition between the restaurants intensifies. Friendly rivalries could emerge, while some residents may find themselves enjoying the drama more than they should.

For Leanne, perhaps the biggest challenge will be balancing her personal and professional lives. She is clearly excited about her future with Idris, but relationships require trust, patience and compromise. At the same time, running a successful business demands enormous commitment and energy.

The pressure of managing both could eventually take its toll.

Fans have already noticed subtle signs that Leanne is throwing herself into work with the same intensity that once made her vulnerable to manipulation. While the circumstances are completely different, some worry that she may once again become so focused on one aspect of her life that she overlooks warning signs elsewhere.

Nevertheless, there is a strong sense that the writers are determined to give Leanne a more hopeful chapter. After enduring loss, betrayal and countless setbacks, she deserves an opportunity to enjoy some happiness.

Jane Danson’s recent comments certainly suggest that lighter moments are on the horizon. The actress has spoken enthusiastically about playing a happier version of Leanne, something viewers have not seen consistently for years. That shift in tone has been welcomed by fans who feel the character has earned a chance to smile again.

Of course, this is Coronation Street, and no period of happiness lasts forever. New arrivals, hidden secrets and unexpected twists are always waiting around the corner. Whether Idris proves to be the partner Leanne has been searching for remains to be seen.

What is clear, however, is that Leanne is entering one of the most intriguing phases of her story in recent memory. Between her blossoming romance, growing business ambitions and ongoing connection to Nick and Toyah, there are countless opportunities for drama.

The months ahead promise plenty of emotional moments, unexpected confrontations and perhaps even a few surprises that nobody sees coming. For now, Leanne is embracing her second chance at happiness.

But on Coronation Street, the question is never whether trouble will arrive.

It is simply a matter of when.
